Distribution and biological peculiarities in Armenia: The species occupies northwestern, northern and northeastern Europe, central and east Asia. The species is monotypic. In Armenian the species is distributed in Lake Arpi, throughout Lake Sevan basin, the Araks Valley, and at other reservoirs in central Armenia, occupying natural and man-made lakes with scattered clumps of Common Reed (Phragmites australis), sedges (Carex) and cattails (Typha), also river floodplains and valleys . Year-round resident. It breeds in thickets of reeds, sedge o cattails, having from 6 to 12 eggs in the clutch. The fledglings are observed in July. The food of the species is mainly consisting of mollusks (especially Mytillus and Cardium spp., gastropods and zebra mussels Dreissena polymorph), crustaceans and aquatic insects, as well as grain and the seeds and vegetative parts of aquatic plants.
